The Campus Microscopy and Imaging Facility (CMIF) is a core facility at The Ohio State University, offering advanced light and biological electron microscopy services to over 200 faculty labs. CMIF provides training, access to state-of-the-art microscopes, and electron microscopy sample preparation.

The CMIF is seeking an Electron Microscopy Technician to support its electron microscopy services. This role focuses on preparing biological samples for electron microscopy, operating and maintaining the transmission electron microscope (TEM), and training users in independent TEM operation. The Electron Microscopy Technician will also assist in developing and refining protocols, including those for correlated light and electron microscopy (CLEM), and will be responsible for maintaining a clean, functional laboratory environment. Training will be provided.

Responsibilities:
Sample Preparation and Laboratory Maintenance:
• Collect, process, and prepare biological samples for electron microscopy, including staining, embedding, and sectioning.
• Prepare buffers, reagents, and other materials required for sample preparation.
• Operate and maintain automated sample processor and ultramicrotomes.
• Keep detailed records of sample processing, reagent preparation, and sample storage.
• Assist the core manager in updating, improving, and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and processing protocols.
• Assist the core manager in the developing CLEM workflows, including performing routine imaging on fluorescence microscopes.

TEM Operation and User Training:
• Train users in the independent operation of the transmission electron microscope (TEM), including creating and developing the training manual and other educational materials for TEM operation.
• Manage TEM scheduling and ensure proper equipment handling.
• Provide imaging services for routine electron microscopy projects.
• Assist the core manager in the maintenance of the TEM.

General Laboratory Support:
• Maintain and clean the biosafety level 1 and biosafety level 2 laboratory suites, including disposal of chemical and biological hazardous waste.
• Gather data for research progress reports and core operation reports, including performing literature searches.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
• High School diploma or GED.
• 2 years of laboratory experience working with biological or chemical samples, including any wet lab (i.e., biology, chemistry, physics, engineering).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with a diverse group of people.

Desired Qualifications:
• Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s Degree in a physical or biological science and 2-4 years of relevant experience.
• Experience in customer service, or customer facing position, and working with a diverse group of people.
• Experience with biological sample preparation for microscopy.
• Experience in operating and maintaining microscopes.
• Hands-on experience cutting samples for microscopy using microtomes, cryostat microtomes, vibratomes, or ultramicrotomes.
• Broad knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physics.
• Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to read and interpret technical scientific literature.

The pay range for this job profile is $22.69 – $29.83. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on multiple factors including internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
