The Faculty of Science and Engineering, Åbo Akademi University and Turku BioImaging invite applications for a fixed-term image data analyst for the period 1.1.2025-31.12.2025. The position is full-time and located at Turku BioImaging (at the subject cluster Biochemistry and Cell Biology) in Turku, Finland.
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Turku BioImaging (TBI) is a multi-disciplinary research infrastructure organization, jointly operated by Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku, focusing on coordinating and organizing bioimaging-related activities and services in biology and medicine. Turku BioImaging also manages Euro-BioImaging Finland (www.eurobioimaging.fi), a European service organization consisting of the highest quality imaging services across Finland, at seven universities and three university hospitals. We work in close collaboration with the international headquarters of Euro-BioImaging, located in Turku.
TBI provides open access image analysis services and data management to both academic and industry customers. These services are part of the offering of Euro-BioImaging Finland. With imaging being the most used research methodology in life sciences, TBI services are elemental in for instance cancer research, virus research, and drug development. This position focuses on image data analysis and bioimage informatics, which is a central and fast-growing part of modern bioimaging.
DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
As an image data analyst you will work on two projects that develop cross-disciplinary image analysis and cancer-related image data management. You will work with Finnish and international researchers, as well as with industry representatives, on diverse image processing and analysis tasks that form part of cutting-edge scientific projects. You will participate in designing and implementing automatic image processing pipelines with open source software for large quantities of scientific image data in a large variety of file formats, testing experimental image processing code, and maintaining source code repositories. You will also participate in image data management and sharing activities. You may occasionally attend conferences and training events to share the results of your work with the scientific community, and participate in organizing courses and workshops. In this work you will meet researchers from various fields and work together with other personnel of Turku BioImaging, as well as our extensive network of collaborators in Turku, and throughout the world. The working language is English. Remote work / hybrid work can be possible in accordance with the regulations at Åbo Akademi University and a trial period applies to new employees.
PROFILE AND QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for a candidate who has the following profile and qualifications:
– The ability to read technical documentation and write clean, well-structured code.
– Practical experience in the use of version control systems and code editors.
– Demonstrates an inquisitive and persistent mindset to solving complex problems.
– A master’s or other corresponding degree in any of the following or associated fields: computer science, image processing, data science, cell biology.
– Good organizational skills, with the ability to work on several projects in parallel.
– Fluent English language skills and knowledge of Swedish. Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens can be exempted from the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish.
The following characteristics are considered to be advantageous:
– Practical experience in leveraging artificial intelligence for computer vision tasks.
– Knowledge of cell biology, microscopy techniques, image acquisition, and image file formats.
– Array manipulation using NumPy.
– Familiarity with Linux as a development environment.
The appointment will be based on an overall assessment of the applicants’ capabilities to carry out the work duties included in the position. The applicants may be invited to an interview.
SALARY
The salary for the position is set on levels 8-9 of the job demand level for other expert and support staff in the salary system of Finnish universities.
