Postdoctoral Researcher in analytical cryo-electron microscopy

Posted on 23 April 2025

Location: Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing Date: 21 May 2025

A postdoctoral position is available in the group of Dr. Bonnie Murphy at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt, Germany to work within the ERC-funded project ‘REEL-EM’. The project aims to develop techniques for elemental mapping within cryo-preserved macromolecular complexes, to address a major unmet need within the structural biology community. Our work brings together the methods of analytical electron microscopy with the powerful image processing tools of single-particle analysis, to allow a high total dose to be spread across many identical copies of a complex of interest (see Pfeil-Gardiner et al., Nature Methods 2024; https://www.nature.com/articles/s41592-024-02482-5).
We are looking for a candidate to join us in advancing the sensitivity and resolution of the technique and to implement and improve workflows for efficient image acquisition and processing.
An ideal candidate for the post will have demonstrated an enthusiasm for methods development in electron microscopy and/or structural biology. Experience in EM, image processing and scientific programming will be key assets. A candidate with extensive experience in STEM-EELS and/or 4D-STEM data acquisition and processing, and/or development work with high-speed data acquisition and processing with hybrid pixel detectors, could be a good fit even if they do not have any experience in biological or cryo-EM.
We are looking for someone who is excited to work at the interface between fields. The candidate should have the ability to work independently but also enjoy collaboration and teamwork. For candidates with extensive experience, an appointment as senior scientist may be considered.
Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis
