Job Summary

The Tang Lab at the University of Virginia is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to develop FIB-SEM imaging and quantitative 3D analysis workflows for load-bearing biological tissues. The position integrates specimen preparation, volume imaging, image reconstruction and segmentation, and structure-mechanics analysis.

Job Description

The successful candidate will help establish reproducible FIB-SEM workflows for bone and soft-hard tissue interfaces, including specimen preparation, serial imaging, artifact mitigation, volume reconstruction, segmentation, and quantitative analysis.
Applicants should have substantial experience in at least one of the following areas and strong interest in developing expertise in the other:
– Hands-on FIB/FIB-SEM, volume EM, or advanced biological electron microscopy
– 3D image processing, reconstruction, segmentation, or machine learning
Experience with lamella preparation, lift-out, serial FIB-SEM, biological or mineralized specimens, Python, MATLAB, ImageJ/Fiji, napari, Dragonfly, Avizo/Amira, or related tools is desirable.
Applicants must hold a PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, bioengineering, microscopy, applied physics, or a related field by the appointment start date.
The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal depending on performance and funding. The start date is flexible.
