About Us:
Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC supports 18 summer courses from May through August in 2024 at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA consisting of students and faculty attending from 30+ countries around the world.
The Zeiss Training Group Summer Interns at MBL are an integral part of our summer support structure. Once interns are oriented, their primary role is to support student and faculty image acquisition activities throughout the summer. This includes basic set up of widefield microscopes, an understanding of Kohler illumination, brightfield, phase contrast, DIC and fluorescence contrasting methods, troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues, as well as conveying an understanding of what constitutes a good scientific image and how to prepare
for and carry out image analysis. 

Here’s What You’ll Do:
This will be an opportunity to learn, operate and support more advanced systems as well, including laser scanning confocal microscopy, Airyscan and potentially other super-resolution techniques. MBL Interns must have good analytic and time management skills, and be detail oriented and conscientious. Additionally, be able to work closely with people from a diverse range of cultural and scientific backgrounds. Inventory and QC along with tracking of equipment is critical. An outgoing disposition is an advantage, with a willingness to proactively engage with faculty and students. Working in overlapping shifts will be essential, so enjoying a strong team environment but also being able to work independently, are both essential for a successful internship.
Do you qualify?
– Student currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. degree in biology, physics, optics, biochemistry or related field.
– Skilled in microscopy, optics, and imaging with a focus or interest in biology.
– Proficiency in computing hardware and software including Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint).
– Ability to work independently for periods of time.
– Excellent verbal & written communication skills.​
– Must be able to lift, using proper form and technique, up to 50 pounds.
– Must be able and willing to work between 40 to 50 hours per week, including shift work.

Nice to Haves:
– Experience with imaging and image analysis software preferred.
The hourly pay range for this position is $15.50 – $17.00.
