Postdoctoral Fellow – High-Speed Microscopy

Posted on 17 June 2025

Location: La Jolla, California

The Bowman lab is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to develop novel instrumentation and methods for high-speed optical microscopy. We have developed nanosecond imaging techniques that enable new approaches for achieving fast, quantitative measurements of fluorescent biosensors. Using these approaches, we are building customized microscopes from the ground up to enable imaging of complex cellular signals in vivo and in 3D tissue environments.
Our work is interdisciplinary by nature, and candidates may come from many different backgrounds including engineering, physics, bioengineering, and neuroscience. For this role we are seeking applicants with prior experience developing optical and/or electronic instrumentation and methods. For example, candidates may have experience building (1) Microscopes – e.g. fluorescence, nonlinear, super-resolution, or label-free techniques, (2) Laser, optical, or atomic physics experiments, (3) Instrument control systems, RF electronics, or image data analysis pipelines, or (4) Imaging and electrophysiology systems for in vivo measurements.
We are committed to working across disciplinary boundaries and to providing a training environment with strong mentorship and career development opportunities. Candidates will have significant opportunities for creativity in defining project directions and will have the chance to participate in fruitful collaborations both within Salk and with external research groups.
