ComeInCell: a new doctoral training network for synthetic cell science
Posted by Amelia Glazier, on 4 November 2024
We are delighted to announce that Journal of Cell Science has recently partnered with ComeInCell, a new European doctoral training network funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action and the UK Horizon Europe Guarantee Scheme, coordinated by Dr Rumiana Dimova at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Germany. ComeInCell (Condensates at Membrane Scaffolds – Integrated Systems as Synthetic Cell Compartments) aims to train the next generation of cell scientists using synthetic biology platforms that integrate functional membrane structures and biomolecular condensates. Advanced integrated biomimetic systems hold great potential not only for elucidating fundamental biological processes, but also for improving our understanding of complex disease mechanisms and for innovating new therapeutic applications. To achieve these goals, the ComeInCell network brings together 14 Principal Investigators and 17 institutions across 9 countries, drawing on expertise in biophysics, nanotechnology, biochemistry and bioengineering.
Excitingly, ComeInCell is recruiting 17 PhD candidates to join this network at institutions in Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Spain, France, Israel, Italy and the UK. Selected PhD candidates will gain hands-on experience across 2-3 different labs, build connections with peers and mentors and participate in annual retreats. Interdisciplinary workshops and lectures will equip students with diverse skill sets for synthetic cell development − with an emphasis on sustainable and cost-effective methods. ComeInCell will also join forces with industry to provide long-term transferable skills, allowing students to gain practical experience at partner companies in biotechnology, software development, and analytical instrumentation.
Students will also have the opportunity to work with the editorial teams of Journal of Cell Science and Nature Communications. At Journal of Cell Science, we recognise the growing impact of synthetic cell biology. As a community journal dedicated to supporting biology for biologists, we are excited to work with the ComeInCell network to improve dissemination of their research and offer trainees insights into the scientific publishing landscape.
ComeInCell is not just advancing scientific knowledge – they’re cultivating a new generation of quantitative synthetic biologists equipped to tackle global challenges in biomedical research and biotechnology. Join us as we explore the fascinating interface between membranes and condensates, paving the way for novel therapeutic strategies and research tools! Interested students can explore the different PhD projects available to find more information about the application process. We will also be highlighting these PhD positions on the FocalPlane Cell Biology Jobs list – so keep an eye out for these exciting opportunities to explore and expand the frontiers of cell science!
