An introduction to Microscopy New Zealand

Posted by , on 28 August 2025

Microscopy New Zealand (MNZ) started in 1978 as a periodic newsletter as a way for electron microscopists to share advice and news around New Zealand. In July 1980, the New Zealand Society of Electron Microscopy Incorporated was officially registered as an incorporated society, and in 1996, its scope was broadened to include all microscopy techniques as it became Microscopy New Zealand Incorporated.

The MNZ aim to drive scientific discovery and innovation by promoting the study and application of light and electron microscopy, along with associated techniques.

Our mission is pursued through the following objectives:

Providing Professional Expertise: Deliver expert advice and support in light and electron microscopy to the scientific community in New Zealand, fostering excellence in research and applications.

Encouraging Education and Collaboration: Promote and facilitate education in light and electron microscopy, including complementary skills in sample preparation, imaging techniques, and image analysis.

Strengthening International and Regional Connections: Maintain active collaboration with the International Federation of Societies for Light and Electron Microscopy and other organisations with similar goals, fostering a global exchange of knowledge and innovation.

During our biennial meetings, the Society organises workshops focused on specific analytical techniques, including image analysis training, with the aim of supporting and educating imaging scientists and researchers in advancing their work through microscopy. In addition, MNZ supports the organisation of Spotlight Seminars and has recently launched an official image competition to celebrate the art of science and highlight the remarkable talent present in Aotearoa.

We maintain a strong knowledge exchange programme with the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society and have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Royal Microscopical Society, further extending our collaborative approach to the UK and European region. Microscopy New Zealand is the collective voice of microscopists in Aotearoa, fostering collaboration, advancing education, and ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of global imaging science.
