AIC at HHMI Janelia

In 2014, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Janelia Research Campus embarked on an experiment – creating a fully open-access imaging center to make Janelia-developed imaging technologies available to scientists across the globe at no cost1. Through the Advanced Imaging Center (AIC), visiting scientists not only gain access to pre-commercial, transformative microscopy technologies, but also are supported by an expert team to guide them from experimental design through image analysis. Access to the AIC is limited neither to HHMI investigators nor to scientists within the United States. It is, however, accessible only through peer-review accepted proposals. How does one write a successful AIC proposal, and what is it like to be a visiting scientist at the imaging center? This blog series aims to give readers a glimpse into these topics.
Over the years, the AIC mission has continued to expand beyond increasing accessibility to advanced microscopes. Having a global mission means we have a global responsibility. Technology dissemination cannot be confined to merely affluent settings. So, the AIC has fought to empower scientists in resource-limited regions with imaging tools and training through various programs. We have also launched an Advanced Microscopy Fellowship, a postdoc equivalent position to pave the way for aspiring young scientists seeking a successful career in microscopy core facilities. We hope that through these blog articles, readers can get a better picture of the imaging center and what the AIC team2 has accomplished globally in all our outreach and training programs.
