Head, Advanced Light Microscopy Innovation Lab (ALMIL) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Posted by , on 29 September 2023

The people of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) are united by a singular mission: ending cancer for life. Our specialized care teams provide personalized, compassionate, expert care to patients of all ages. Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe. One of the world’s most respected comprehensive centers devoted exclusively to cancer, we have been recognized as one of the top two cancer hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report for more than 30 years.

The Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI) of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is seeking an accomplished, motivated, and innovative individual to head an Advanced Light Microscopy Innovation Lab (ALMIL). The ALMIL is envisioned as a platform for cutting-edge light microscopic image data acquisition and analysis, serving the broader Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) community.

The ALMIL is being established to support research laboratories needing to use new and state-of-the-art light microscopic methods and modalities. The ALMIL will operate outside the purview of routine services provided by a core facility model, with the purpose of enabling cutting-edge light microscopy at MSK; from turn-key commercial instrumentation, to custom-built instrumentation, to advanced image data analyses.

The head of the ALMIL will consult with SKI investigators on their emergent imaging needs for the implementation of new technologies and acquisition of new instrumentation. They will oversee the installation, maintenance and operation of instrumentation. They will consult on experimental planning and data analyses, and conduct expert user training. They will coordinate with users to perform R&D, including (but not limited to) establishing protocols for novel applications of single molecule imaging, super resolution microscopy, advanced 3D microscopy, tissue clearing or multiplex labeling strategies.

This will be a laboratory-track position in one of the Sloan Kettering Institute programs.

SKI offers a highly interactive basic and translational science research environment (www.ski.edu) and is in a multi-institutional academic community. This position if fully supported by the institution.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Ph.D. in cell biology, developmental biology, biophysics, or a related discipline.
  • 5 or more years of experience in the academic or commercial sector.
  • Expertise with different light microscopy modalities for imaging specimens across scales (super-resolution, confocal, multi-photon, SPIM etc.)
  • Knowledge of image data processing and analysis methods, and familiarity with current tools.
  • A basic understanding of optics is essential, and ability to modify or build instrumentation would be desirable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and proficiency in teaching/training.
