New partnership with MicroscopyDB

Posted by , on 30 October 2023

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with MicroscopyDB – a global repository of online microscopy resources. This new partnership means that the listings on our job and events boards will be pulled in from the MicroscopyDB database, ensuring that FocalPlane readers can keep up to date with event and job listings across the world. We encourage you to upload your jobs and events directly on MicroscopyDB. Doing this couldn’t be easier; after completely a simple form, the listing will be reviewed by the MicroscopyDB team and disseminated to the partner websites, including FocalPlane.

MicroscopyDB emerged after discussion at the 2022 European Light Microscopy Initiative with founding members from African BioImaging consortium, BioImaging North America, BioImaging UK, Canada BioImaging, EuroBioImaging, Global BioImaging, Royal Microscopical Society and German BioImaging. It is led by a Steering Committee that includes representatives from the founding member groups and community partners. Kate Luby-Phelps is the Steering Committee Chair and chair of the BINA Training and Education working group and Sylvie Le Guyader is vice-chair of the Steering Committee, while Nikki Bialy handles coordination and partner logistics and Vanessa Orr manages the databases and updates that make the content available on the partner websites.

We caught up with the team to find out more about the project.

Why create MicroscopyDB?

The ecosystem for sharing about events, jobs, and training resources is very rich, but also fragmented.  Now with MicroscopyDB, someone who wants to contribute content can submit the details to MicroscopyDB once via the relevant form and then it is available to all the partner websites.  The contributor does not have to submit in multiple places to broadly disseminate their announcement/resource.  This also ensures consistency in content across partner websites.

How is the database funded?

The pilot funding for the database has come from a grant awarded to BioImaging North America (BINA) from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) DAF, an advised fund of Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Are you looking for more partner sites?

Yes, MicroscopyDB is eager to have more imaging communities join as partners!  Please reach out to us at contact@microscopydb.io if your organization is interested.

Is the event listing just for conferences?

The event listing is not just for conferences, it is also for workshops, webinars, seminars, and any event related to microscopy.  We encourage people to add “save the dates” for upcoming events to help the imaging community with scheduling, and we are particularly interested to have hybrid and online events shared since they are accessible to the global audience.

Can I advertise a job for a biologist using microscopy, or is it just for ‘hardcore’ microscopists?

Any job that is microscopy or imaging related can be shared on the MicroscopyDB!  There is also the opportunity to share non-permanent positions, such as internships, PhD positions, and postdocs.
