FocalPlane features… microscopy-based outreach

Posted by , on 11 March 2024

The first webinar of our new series of FocalPlane features… focussed on microscopy-based outreach projects. We hosted fantastic talks from Paola Moreno-Roman from Foldscope Instruments, Inc. and Martin Jones from The Francis Crick Institute.

Paola discussed the importance of making the right to explore our universe accessible for everyone. Foldscope Instruments, Inc. work to do this through their innovative paper microscopes, outreach projects and their Microcosmos community. Paola presented some case studies and explained how the audience can get involved with the Foldscope mission.

Martin focussed on the importance of considering your audience when pitching outreach talks and activities. Martin also discussed the goals of outreach activity, the importance of a ‘hook’ and collaborating with stakeholders such as teachers.

We are delighted that Paola and Martin have allowed us to share their talks and you can find the recordings below.

In our next webinar on 25 April, Jennifer Waters and Robert Haase will be sharing their insights and experiences on microscopy education.

Paola Moreno-Roman – Magnifying Curiosity Worldwide

Martin Jones – Presenting imaging and analysis at outreach events in schools and beyond
